eat all the smith & deli sandwiches – #6, maury ballstein

maury ballstein sandwich

So here we are at Day 6 of the great Smith & Deli sandwich challenge. Already, somewhat sadly, a number of the staff know me by name and know of the great sandwich project. I’m being asked which is my favourite. So far it is the Home Alone. But there are still 25+ sandwiches to go.

Today I tried the mysteriously named Maury Ballstein. Most of the names I get, but this one eluded me, so I had to Google. I think it is named after ‘The Maury Show’ which is all about paternity suits, cheating and other less lofty human behaviours. The urban dictionary defines it as an entertaining show that 98% of the time shows that the human race is doomed. If so it is an offence to name this sandwich after the show. One is a pile of trash, the other deliciousness in a bun. The sandwich wins. 🙂

This sandwich is definitely staying on my list of favourites.  It has great strong flavours, a rich tomato sauce, soft lentil meatballs, pesto and melted mozzarella all housed in a delicious crunchy roll and topped with rocket.

Perfect on a cold winter day in Melbourne.

Edit: I stand corrected, the sandwich is named for Maury Ballstein from Balls Models in Zoolander! Thanks Leigh for your superior pop culture knowledge.

I assumed it was named for Maury Ballstein from Balls Models in Zoolander 🙂

It’s definitely on my top ten of sandwiches I want to try at Smith&Deli.

  2. Susan says:

This looks good. I love a meatball sub.

  3. Linda says:

I wish they were open on Sundays! Still, I did have a Trang’s tempura eggplant bahn mi for brunch, so I can’t really complain.

  4. that’s my next sandwich!

  5. Liza says:

So…as a vegan who has about 20 hours in Melbourne, which Smith and Deli sandwich should I eat?!

Liza, it is so hard to recommend for anyone else. It is so personal. My favourites so far are Home Alone, Little Havana, Chicken Salad, Free Willy 2 and the Rocky I think.

  6. This is one of the few I have had – the ‘meatballs’ were a lot lighter than I expected – I have had ‘meatballs with texture I like more’ and by the time I had got to eat mine the mozza had cooled which is one of the problems of takeaway – it was good but I much preferred the home alone. I really would love to know what is in the meatballs (and all their mock meat)

  7. Michael Thomas says:

They changed the pesto. It now has coriander and orange zest flavor through it. My favorite menu item quickly became my most hated.
